All-Time Favorite Movies

A list of favorite movies says a lot about your tastes, experiences, and where and when you grew up. It's more a way of measuring where I am in my experience of life and the movies than any definitive statement on what constitutes greatness.

I gravitate towards movies that are dreamy ("The Thin Red Line"), intimate ("Killer of Sheep"), sprawling ("JFK"), intimate AND sprawling ("Lawrence of Arabia"), ambiguous ("Last Year at Marienbad"), long ("Satantango"), experimental ("La jetee"), nightmarish ("Texas Chainsaw Massacre"), grainy ("Clerks"), fuzzy ("Atanarjuat"), forgiving ("Playtime"), intensely visual ("Barry Lyndon"), formally rigid ("No Country for Old Men"), free-form ("Shoot the Piano Player"), voyeuristic ("Psycho"), bleak ("Out of the Past"), really about movies ("Blow Out"), quiet ("Andrei Roublev"), serious about the spirit ("Passion of Joan of Arc"), serious about existentialism ("Hannah and Her Sisters"), fun ("Charade"), interested in time ("Once Upon a Time in the West"), interested in death ("Don't Look Now"), not preachy, and don't have a lot of talking ("Nosferatu").
